ZEBU

HISTORY:

The oldest depictions of the zebu were unearthed from the Proto-Indusculture of Baluchistan and are at least 6000 years old. They were introduced in the period 2200 - 1500 BC to the Indian subcontinent, where they gradually absorbed the indigenous hump less cattle. Miniature zebus are among 30+ zebu breeds in the areas of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Poor conditions in many areas cannot support the larger breeds thus these diminutive cattle have developed as they are the most economical to keep. A few of these were imported in the 1920's for zoological gardens in this country.

CHARACTERISTICS:

The most common color of Zebu is gray but they can also be red, black or spotted. The calves of the gray Zebu commonly are born white and turn gray or are born red and turn gray. The grays can lighten with age to almost white or some will gradually develop the black markings on the neck, shoulders and hump. Zebus have a hump. It is large in bulls, but not always highly developed in cows. The hump is directly above the shoulders and is upright and firm. Zebu horns are relatively short (12") curving outwards and upward, although down swept is seen. Miniature Zebu are slow to mature. It seems the smaller the animal; the older they are when they first breed. They are a hardy breed and have a high resistance to disease.

REGISTRATION:

All of our Miniature Zebu are foundation pure and registered with the International Miniature Zebu Association.

CARE:

Miniature Zebu are a tropical breed, they handle the heat very well. In fact, the hotter it is the better they seem to like it. If you are in the cold climates, you must furnish them with proper feed and housing in the winter months if they are to survive.
